Homework in EYFS
In EYFS, we believe that learning at home should be enjoyable, meaningful and provide opportunities for families to learn together. We encourage children to read and share books regularly at home, developing a love of stories, language and reading. Children will also have opportunities to take home a story bag, providing fun activities linked to a book to enjoy together as a family. Numberblocks can be used at home to support children’s early understanding of numbers and maths in an engaging way. In Pre-School, our focus is on enjoying and sharing the story bag together. We also love to celebrate learning and achievements that happen beyond school, so families are encouraged to share their child’s special “WOW moments” through ClassDojo, allowing us to celebrate these important experiences together.
Homework in Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, homework is designed to reinforce learning from the classroom, build confidence and encourage positive learning habits at home. Children are encouraged to read regularly using a reading book carefully matched to their Sounds-Write learning, helping them practise and consolidate the skills they are developing in school. Alongside this, we want every child to develop a lifelong love of reading. Children therefore have the opportunity to select a library book each week for Reading for Pleasure, which they can enjoy and share with their family at home. In Year 2, children will also use CGP Maths books to practise key mathematical skills and reinforce their classroom learning.
Homework in Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, homework is designed to consolidate classroom learning, develop independence and encourage positive learning habits. Children are expected to read regularly at home, choosing books that provide appropriate challenge while also fostering a love and enjoyment of reading. Children will also use CGP Maths homework books to practise and reinforce the key mathematical knowledge and skills taught in school.
As part of their weekly homework routine, pupils are also expected to engage with Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRockstars) and Spelling Shed each week. Regular practice on these platforms will help children to develop fluency and confidence in their times tables and strengthen their spelling knowledge and skills.
In addition, we are working towards introducing a consistent approach to spelling homework across Years 1–6 by the October half term, providing children with further opportunities to practise and apply their spelling knowledge at home.
