Positive and Safe Unstructured Times
At St Alban’s, we believe that break and lunchtimes are important parts of the school day, providing pupils with opportunities to socialise, be active, and refocus their minds before returning to learning. To ensure that these times run smoothly, safely, and positively, we have clear structures and routines in place.
Breaktime Routines
During morning break, pupils enjoy time outside under the supervision of staff. To maintain order and safety:
- A whistle system is used to signal transitions at the end of break.
- First whistle – Pupils stop what they are doing and stand still.
- Second whistle – Pupils complete the Daily Mile, ensuring movement and activity.
- Third whistle – Pupils return to class via their allocated doors in an orderly manner.
- No equipment is allowed at breaktime, ensuring a safe and distraction-free environment.
- Pupils are expected to be seated and ready to learn promptly after break, promoting self-awareness and responsibility. Classes who meet this expectation receive Class Dojo points as a reward.
Lunchtime Routines
Lunchtimes are structured to provide a balance of eating time, social interaction, and physical activity. Our routine includes:
- A whistle system to transition pupils from play to dining:
- First whistle – Pupils stand still and listen.
- Second whistle – Pupils collect belongings and begin the Daily Mile.
- Third whistle – Pupils go inside via allocated doors in an orderly manner.
- Pupils are encouraged to demonstrate good manners in the dining hall by using polite language, sitting properly, and respecting others.
- Play Leaders help younger pupils and support structured activities during playtime.
Zones for Play and Activities
To ensure all pupils have an enjoyable experience, we provide designated play zones:
- Sports Zone – Year groups take turns using this area for organised sports activities.
- Field Area (Weather Permitting) – Open to the same year group assigned to the Sports Zone for extra space and freedom to play.
- Quiet Areas – Spaces for pupils who prefer a calm and relaxed environment.
Supervision and First Aid
Our break and lunchtime staff are trained to monitor pupil wellbeing and behaviour, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be safe and happy. Designated staff carry first aid bags and are available to assist with minor injuries. If a pupil has a suspected breakage or head bump, they will be assessed by a paediatric first aid trained member of staff and parents will be informed.
Encouraging Positive Behaviour
Pupils are expected to demonstrate our Character Behaviours throughout break and lunchtime by showing:
- Respect for others, staff, and equipment.
- Kindness and inclusion, ensuring no one is left out.
- Responsibility by following routines and listening to staff.
Pupils who meet expectations and show exceptional behaviour may receive Class Dojo points and other rewards. Those who do not follow the school rules will receive reminders, warnings, or further support to help them reflect and improve their choices.
By maintaining clear routines, structured activities, and a supportive environment, we ensure that break and lunchtimes are enjoyable, safe, and positive experiences for all pupils at St Alban’s.
